Rehearsals of Balanchine's RAYMONDA VARIATIONS are well underway for our upcoming Workshop Performances. This ballet is a tour de force of technical prowess, ebullient effervescence, and classical elegance. With a gorgeous pas de deux and a series of short variations at the center of the work, RAYMONDA VARIATIONS is one of three plotless Balanchine ballets that utilize Alexander Glazounov's score from the original full-length version of RAYMONDA (the other two are PAS DE DIX and CORTÈGE HONGROIS, which is also on the Workshop program this year.)

When asked about RAYMONDA VARIATIONS, Balanchine said, "To try to talk about these dances in any useful way outside the music is not possible; they do not have any literary content at all and of course have nothing to do with the story of the original ballet RAYMONDA. The music itself, its grand and generous manner, its joy and playfulness, was for me more than enough to carry the plot of the dances."

See the music come to life yourself by joining us at this year's Workshop Performances on June 7 at 2 PM or 8 PM, or at our Benefit Performance on June 9 at 7:30 PM. Tickets on sale now:#LinkInBio

In Boys Level I, students begin building on the ballet fundamentals they learned in our preparatory division and start establishing a foundation for more technical exercises. We applaud all our Boys I students who have worked so hard this year!

SAB’s Workshop Performances are the pinnacle of our school year. This isn’t a recital, it’s a professional production highlighting our students’ technique and artistry through choreographic masterworks performed at Lincoln Center with a live orchestra. For 60 years, Workshop has served as the debut for dozens upon dozens of ballet stars - launching them into incredible careers on and off the stage. An event such as this doesn’t happen overnight. It takes months of rehearsal and years of dedicated training. It takes sweat, struggle, and a million moments in the studio that add up to unforgettable moments on stage.
