Admission Criteria

At the time of the January auditions, students 10 or younger (including 9 year olds who will be 10 by July 31, 2020) are expected to have completed a minimum of 1-1/2 years of training. Eleven year olds should have completed a minimum of 2 years of training (including introductory pointe work), and 12 year olds should be training at the intermediate level.

The aesthetic of George Balanchine, which emphasizes speed, musicality, control and precision guides SAB’s instruction. Classes in Ballet Technique, Variations and Pointe will be offered at the NYC Junior Session.  In addition to a daily co-ed technique class, male students will also have a daily boys-only class focusing on turns, jumps and upper body strength.  The curriculum also includes Pilates mat classes, Nutrition and Physical Therapy seminars and cultural enrichment programs.

Members of SAB’s permanent faculty as well as guest teachers from New York City Ballet will comprise the faculty of the New York Junior Session.

Housing and transportation will not be provided for students attending the NYC Junior Session. The program is designed for local-area students or for those who are able to arrange temporary accommodations within commuting distance of SAB.

Classes will be held Monday, June 22, through Saturday, June 27, with each level attending two ballet classes, seminars and workshops, between 10:30am and 4pm. Parents should drop students off at the School beginning at 10 am and pick students up at 4 pm.
