California Workshop for Young Dancers Overview

The California Workshop is designed for serious ballet students between the ages of 10 and 12.  Students must be no younger than 10* and no older than 12 as of July 31, 2020.

*Nine year olds who will turn 10 by July 31 are eligible enroll in the Young Dancer Series.

All students meeting the age requirements are permitted to apply to both Young Dancer Series programs, and those who are 12 as of July 31, 2020, may also apply to the 5-week Summer Course in NYC.



Admission to the California Workshop is by audition only.  Students may audition at one of the National Audition Tour locations or at SAB in New York City on specific dates in January.  Click here for more information about auditions for the Young Dancer Series.

Admission Criteria

At the time of the January auditions, students 10 or younger (including 9 year olds who will be 10 by July 31, 2020) are expected to have completed a minimum of 1-1/2 years of training. Eleven year olds should have completed a minimum of 2 years of training (including introductory pointe work), and 12 year olds should be training at the intermediate level.


The aesthetic of George Balanchine, which emphasizes speed, musicality, control and precision guides SAB’s instruction. Classes in Ballet Technique, Variations and Pointe will be offered at the CA Workshop.  Weekly Pilates mat classes by a certified instructor are also offered to all Workshop participants.


Members of SAB’s permanent faculty and New York City Ballet alumni will conduct the CA Workshop classes.


Housing and transportation will not be provided for students attending the CA Workshop. The program is designed for local-area students or for those who are able to arrange temporary accommodations within commuting distance of the Maple Conservatory of Dance.


Classes will be held Monday through Friday with each level taking two classes between 12 and 4pm. No classes will be held on Saturdays and Sundays.
