This year’s Workshop Performances and Workshop Performance Benefit were special for many reasons. They were special in that it was the first time the School has been able to hold a traditional Workshop in three years and as such, it marked the School’s return of our Workshop to the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Lincoln Center. They were special because the Saturday performances were danced in celebration of faculty member Suki Schorer’s 50th anniversary of teaching at SAB, and the Workshop Benefit Performance on Monday was held in honor of Kay Mazzo as she completed her tenure as Chairman of Faculty. They were special because they included a world premiere of a new ballet by choreographer and SAB alumna Gianna Reisen – the first commissioned ballet for Workshop in quite some time. And it was also a special weekend simply because of how beautifully the students performed. After all the challenges of training during the pandemic, this year’s Workshop, while still certainly affected by Covid, was in many ways a triumph over all the uncertainty of the past few years.
It’s been a few weeks since that unforgettable weekend of shows, but in many ways, we are still in awe of the tremendous achievement of the performing students – dancers in our Children’s Division all the way up through to those in our most advanced levels. Nothing quite compares to witnessing an SAB Workshop Performance in person, but we’ve assembled a handful of photos – from the wings to the stage – that capture the magic of the performances better than anything we could put into words….
