Know Before You Go: Summer Intensive Auditions

Audition season is officially here and we are so excited to welcome students from all corners of the country to join us at SAB’s National Audition Tour! We’ve put together a quick guide with some tips and helpful information to help you prepare for a smooth, successful experience!

Pack Your Bag

The key to a stress-free audition day is being organized and prepared. Be sure to remember to bring proof of age, like a copy of your birth certificate or passport, to show when you arrive. Girls Training Track students will also need pointe shoes if you are auditioning for Summer Course and have already been training en pointe. When packing, remember to leave some things at home – there’s no need for pictures or headshots, and you’ll want to save your warm-ups for before and after class, as they are not worn during the audition itself.

Dress for Success

When getting ready for your audition, wear something to make you feel like your most confident self!

For Girls Training Track students, choose any solid color leotard paired with flesh tone tights. For Boys Training Track students, a solid-color t-shirt (no words or pictures, please!) works best, along with black or grey tights, and white or black ankle socks and ballet slippers.

Know Your Audition Group and Arrival Time

Taking note of the schedule helps you focus on dancing! Be sure to know your audition group and dance with the group that corresponds with your age on the day of the audition. A quick tip: always double-check the official website one last time—just in case of any last-minute schedule changes. Plan to arrive with plenty of time to check in and relax: 30 minutes before the very first audition time of the day, and 1 hour before all other scheduled times. At check in, you’ll be given a number which you will wear for the length of the audition.

Know What to Expect in the Class

Take a deep breath! The audition format is designed to give you the best opportunity to showcase your training, but no one expects you to dance beyond your capabilities. The class you participate in will be a modified ballet class, about an hour in length, and will be taught members of by SAB’s incredible faculty, providing you with a glimpse at what you can expect at one of our summer programs. You will likely see at least one or more additional faculty members observing the class and taking notes as well.

You’ll be led through a short barre, followed by center combinations. Be sure to stay in numerical order as you are brought up in groups to dance the exercises. The class may conclude with some jump combinations for the Boys Training Track students, and pointe work for the Girls Training Track students if there’s time.

And that will be it! You get to keep your number but we ask you return the safety pins we provided back to an SAB audition staff member (so we can reuse them!)

Still have questions? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions for even more information. We can’t wait to see you at an upcoming audition! If you haven’t registered yet, you can still do so, but space is limited, so don’t delay!
