New York City Ballet principal dancer and SAB faculty member Megan Fairchild has performed the role of the Russian Girl in SERENADE numerous times throughout her career. So, it seemed only fitting for her to impart some of her experience, perspective, and advice for interpreting this Balanchine masterpiece to one of the SAB students who will be dancing a portion of the role in New York City Ballet’s one-night Balanchine + Ratmansky program tomorrow.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Watch as advanced student Lucie and Ms. Fairchild discuss what they love about the ballet and be sure to get your tickets for this very special performance celebrating SAB’s 90th anniversary and the legacy of Mr. B’s first ballet made in America.

While the primary goal of SAB’s training is to prepare dancers for the professional stage, the art of choreography has also been integral to the Company and the School. Not surprising when you consider that our co-founder is George Balanchine!

In 1997, SAB began its annual Student Choreography Workshop which provided students the opportunity to flex their choreographic skills by creating new works on their peers. The purpose of the program was to provide students with the tools and a supportive environment to explore their creativity as choreographers. Over the years, the program has fostered the choreographic talents of some of today’s most accomplished and renowned choreographers, many of whom have returned to craft new pieces for students at the School. In our latest #SAB90 blog post, take a look back on some of our accomplished alumni who got their start at the Student Choreography Workshop!

With its impressive corps de ballet of female dancers, George Balanchine’s SERENADE has a wonderful thematic of community, friendship, and sisterhood. These feelings are perhaps most accentuated in this sequence with just five dancers, as they join hands and move together, winding and unwinding into a huddle, then back to a line. In its enigmatic simplicity, we glimpse the special bond between budding ballerinas - a truly unique shared experience that comes from spending years learning this beautiful art form together.

Our students have been busy rehearsing SERENADE for their upcoming performance with New York City Ballet on October 1, celebrating the 90th anniversary of the School and Balanchine’s masterpiece. We hope you join us at the performance! #LinkInBio

Training at SAB is so much more than just striving for excellence in the ballet studio or on the stage. Every class we teach imparts skills our students can take with them into all aspects of their lives, wherever it may lead them. One crucial attribute that’s often talked about in our studios is the idea of respecting one another and, as faculty member Allen Peiffer puts it, respecting each other is essential in partnering class.
