George Balanchine's The Nutcracker

(Tschaikovsky/Balanchine)

This ballet, a holiday classic, utilizes two casts of about sixty young boys and girls in its annual five-week run at Lincoln Center’s New York State Theater. Performing in Nutcracker requires a three-month commitment from students and their families. The children’s cast is selected by NYCB Children’s Ballet Mistress Dena Abergel in early October. Rehearsals begin immediately thereafter and are scheduled at least twice per week in the evenings and on weekends through the end of November. Performances begin after Thanksgiving and typically run through New Year’s Eve. The two children’s casts alternate performances, which are scheduled Tuesday through Sunday. Each cast performs an average four times per week.
