A. Katarina Batist 1953-2009

The entire SAB family mourns the passing on October 11, 2009, of A. Katarina Batist, a hugely talented musician who has been a class pianist at the School for the past 27 years. Since the fall of 1982, students have pliéd and jetéd to Katarina’s arrangements of musical selections both classic and contemporary, ranging from Bach to the Beatles. Opera, Broadway show tunes, movie themes and Top 40 hits were equally at home in her repertoire. Over the years, Katarina worked with many of SAB’s faculty and played for most class levels, ranging from children to the most advanced students. She forged a memorable partnership with noted faculty member Stanley Williams late in his teaching career, and after his death in 1997 she released an album of music inspired by his classes: A. Katarina Batist in memory of Stanley Williams. Katarina is survived by her husband, Boris. SAB extends its deepest sympathies to Katarina’s family and friends. She was a one-of-a-kind talent who will be missed by all who knew her.
